Grammichelesi of Victoria Project Progress
Sarina Greco and Lucia Paglia Greco were recently in Grammichele where they were received by the Mayor Giuseppe Greco. We requested help from the team at the municipal Archives of Grammichele to compile a comprehensive list of those who departed Grammichele for Australia over the last century.
Our request was promptly actioned by the Mayor who called in the head of Archives, Cettina Vaccaria. The team are busy working on the details.

While on a recent trip to Italy, two members of our GoV project team, Sarina Greco and Lucia Greco, had the opportunity to meet with the Sindaco de Grammichele (Grammichele Council). Also attending the meeting was journalist, Nuccio Merlini, who wrote an article for the local provincial newspaper, La Gazzetta del Calantino. He also wrote an article for La Sicilia, the local daily newspaper.

Emigrati di "ritorno" dall'Australia

Una visita e un ritorno a Grammichele per riaprire pagina di storia, che riallaccia un rapporto mai sopito e avere un elenco di grammichelesi emigrati in Australia.
Questa la "mission" di Sarina Greco e Lucia Paglia, emigrati di seconda genezioni, ritornati a Grammichele per incontrare i parenti, rendere omaggio ai propri cari seppelliti nel civico cimitero e incontrare il Sindaco Pippo Greco, spiegando che il proprio intento è quello di conservare e onorare il coraggio, i sacrifici e i successi degli emigrati Grammichelesi in Australia. Invito questo immediatamente raccolto dal primo cittadino che ha messo loro a disposizione notizie e avvenimenti custoditi nell'archivio storico del Comune.
“Pur essendo alla seconda e terza generazione, noi Grammichelesi-Australiani – hanno detto Sarina e Lucia – continuiamo a mantenere forte legame on il nostro paese, perché parte integrante della nostra storia e identità e pertanto, intendiamo promuovere una migliore comprensione tra le giovani generazioni di Grammichelesi-Australiani, riaffermando il coraggio e il sacrificio dei nonni e bisnonni emigrati, perché la loro eredità è preziosa per la generazioni presenti e future.”
“Attraverso queste ricerche — spiegano Greco e Paglia — elaboreremo una pubblicazione che celebrerà e farà conoscere la storia di oltre 100 anni di Grammichelesi in Australia, fornendo e riaffermando legami sociali, che legano i compaesani alle loro famiglie di origine, così come faceva il disciolto Grammichele Social Club, auspicando che il nostro lavoro possa costruire ponti più solidi con la Grammichele moderna, il suo significato storico e sociale, poiché molti dei nostri giovani visitano Grammichele appunto per capirne meglio la storia. Ringraziamo il Sindaco Pippo Greco per l’accoglienza e per aver ben capito il nostro desiderio di offrire alla generazioni future un più forte legame alla comunità Grammichelese in Australia e alla storia che parte dal nostro amato paese Grammichele.”
Immediato il riscontro al loro appello, perché le solerti Concetta, Filippa e Rosetta, le hanno contattato per informarle che sono già a lavoro per fornire le informazioni inerenti l'elenco degli emigrati all’Australia.
"Tornando in Sicilia e a Grammichele — commentano Sarina e Lucia — visitando i parenti e apprezzando le bellezze della nostra città, ribadiamo che è per noi un’esperienza speciale e ritornando in Australia, parleremo della storia distintiva delle nostre famiglie e della sensazione di trovare Grammichele ringiovinita, con la piazza che racconta una storia bella del passato distintivo e del presente. Inimmaginabile la gioia di assistere alla festa dei Santi Patroni, vedere tanti giovani con un forte senso di comunità e fede e con la banda che tocca il cuore, creando memorie della città indimenticabili, così come gustare i pidunedi di spinaci e la pasta coi tenerumi, che suscitano sensazioni e ricordi.”
La visita al Santuario della Madonna del Piano accompagnati dal loro parente, vescovo emerito di Monreale, mons. Michele Pennisi, ribadiscono “siamo rimaste colpite dalla magnificenza del luogo, così come visitando la distrutta Occhiolà, accompagnate da Loredana Fragapane.”
Un ritorno che evoca tanti ricordi e lega ancor più chi emigrando, non ha mai dimenticato la natia Grammichele, perché, come ha commentato Lucia Paglia-Greco, che è stata contentissima del soggiorno a Grammichele con zii e cugini, per la calorosa accoglienza del sindaco Giuseppe Greco e del lavoro importantissimo delle signore dell’archivio per le informazioni degli immigrati Grammichelesi in Australia, utile per realizzare quel progetto, per le future generazioni dei discendenti Grammichelesi. Ricordi, ma anche bisogno, di intessere un rapporto sempre più stretto con quella Grammichele che i loro genitori lasciarono tanto tempo fa.

Return to the town of origin for a new page
Emigrants ‘returning’ from Australia
A visit and a return to Grammichele to reopen a page of history, which reconnects a relationship that has never died down and to compile a complete list of Grammichele residents who emigrated to Australia.
This is the "mission" of Sarina Greco and Lucia Paglia, second generation emigrants, who returned to Grammichele to meet their relatives, pay homage to their loved ones buried in the civic cemetery and meet the Mayor Pippo Greco, explaining that their intent is to preserve and honour the courage, sacrifices and successes of Grammichele residents who emigrated to Australia. This invitation was immediately accepted by the mayor who made available to them news and events kept in the historical archive of the Municipality.
“Even though we are in the second and third generation, we Grammichelesi-Australians – said Sarina and Lucia – continue to maintain a strong bond with our country, because it is an integral part of our history and identity and therefore, we intend to promote a better understanding between the young generations of Grammichelesi-Australians, reaffirming the courage and sacrifice of the grandparents and great-grandparents who emigrated, because their legacy is precious for present and future generations.”
“Through this research — Greco and Paglia explain — we will develop a publication that will celebrate and publicize the history of over 100 years of Grammichelesi in Australia, providing and reaffirming social ties that bind fellow villagers to their families of origin, as the dissolved Grammichele Social Club did, hoping that our work can build stronger bridges with modern Grammichele, its historical and social significance, since many of our young people visit Grammichele precisely to better understand its history. We thank Mayor Pippo Greco for the welcome and for having understood our desire to offer future generations a stronger bond to the Grammichelese community in Australia and to the history that starts from our beloved town of Grammichele.”
The response to their appeal was immediate, because the diligent Concetta, Filippa and Rosetta contacted them to inform them that they are already working to provide information regarding the list of emigrants to Australia.
"Returning to Sicily and Grammichele - comment Sarina and Lucia - visiting relatives and appreciating the beauty of our town, we reiterate that it is a special experience for us and returning to Australia, we will talk about the distinctive history of our families and the feeling of finding Grammichele rejuvenated, with the square that tells a beautiful story of its distinctive past and of the present. Unimaginable the elation of attending the Feast of the Patron Saints, seeing so many young people with a strong sense of community and faith and with the local band that touches the heart, creating unforgettable memories of our town … as well as tasting the spinach pidunedi and pasta with tenerumi, which awaken sensations and memories."
The visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Piano accompanied by their relative, bishop emeritus of Monreale, mons. Michele Pennisi, they reiterate "we were struck by the magnificence of the place, as well as visiting the destroyed Occhiolà, accompanied by Loredana Fragapane."
A return that evokes many memories and connects even more those who emigrated but never forgot their native Grammichele. Lucia Paglia-Greco commented she was very happy with the stay in Grammichele with uncles and cousins, with the warm welcome of the mayor Giuseppe Greco and the very important work of the ladies of the archive for the information of Grammichelese immigrants in Australia, essential to realize that project, for the future generations of Grammichelese descendants. Memories, but also the desire to weave an ever closer relationship with that Grammichele that their parents left so long ago.

per due donne figlie di emigrati in Australia
GRAMMICHELE Ricordi e prospettive per due australiane a Grammichele. Non è stato un semplice ritorno in città, ma una "mission" per rinsaldare rapporti e ricordi. Dopo l'incontro con i parenti e la visita al cimitero, Sarina Greco e Lucia Paglia Greco, sono stati ricevuti dal sindaco Pippo Greco, al quale hanno chiesto di poter acquisire dati dall'archivio storico per conoscere nomi e storie di quanti, nel secolo scorso, emigrarono in Australia, dove con sacrifici e grandi capacità, hanno onorato l'Italia.
Appello prontamente accolto dal sindaco che ha messo loro a disposizione notizie e nominativi, custoditi nell'archivio storico, mettendole in contatto con le addette.
“Pur essendo già alla seconda e terza generazione — hanno dichiarato Sarina e Lucia — sentiamo forte il desiderio di tornare a Grammichele e il legame che ci lega ad esso ritenendolo parte integrante della nostra storia e identità e per questo intendiamo promuovere una migliore comprensione tra le giovani generazioni di grammichelesi-australiani, per meglio valorizzarne l'eredità come supporto prezioso per le nuove generazioni”.
“Attraverso queste ricerche e grazie al prezioso lavoro e disponibilità che apprezziamo — concludono — elaboreremo pubblicazioni per mantenere vivo il rapporto che ci lega a Grammichele, divulgando i loro nomi per riaffermare conoscenza e legami, convinti come siamo che il nostro lavoro costruisca ponti sempre più solidi con la Grammichele moderna, che abbiam trovato bellissima”.

GRAMMICHELE Memories and viewpoints of two Australians in Grammichele. It was not a simple return to the city, but a "mission" to strengthen relationships and
memories. After meeting with relatives and visiting the cemetery, Sarina Greco and Lucia Paglia Greco were received by the mayor Pippo Greco, to whom they asked to acquire data from the historical archive to learn the names and stories of those who, in the last century, emigrated to Australia, where with sacrifices and great ability, they honored Italy.

“Through this research and thanks to the precious work and availability that we appreciate - they conclude - we will prepare publications to keep alive the relationship that binds us to Grammichele, spreading their names to reaffirm knowledge and ties, convinced as we are that our work builds increasingly solid bridges with modern Grammichele, which we found beautiful”.
